As the countdown to the Paris 2024 Olympics ticks down to just 50 days, the excitement and anticipation are real. This year's journey to Paris has been particularly special for me, marked by an unforgettable experience as a torchbearer for the Olympic flame.
Earlier this year, I had the incredible honor of carrying the Olympic torch through the ancient archaeological site of Aiges, home to the Royal Tombs of Vergina, near my hometown of Naousa.
A walk through history
Walking through the ancient ruins of Aiges, holding the Olympic flame, was a fantastic and humbling experience. The Royal Tombs of Vergina are a symbol of the enduring legacy of our ancestors and while i was carrying the flame at this historical landmark, I felt a deep connection to the past.
The torch relay is more than just a ceremonial event; it is a powerful reminder of the unity and continuity of the Olympic spirit. The flame, which lies in Olympia and passes hand in hand with the torch-bearers, embodies the values of peace, friendship, and fair play. Being part of this tradition was an honour and filled me with immense pride.
My Reflection
As I ran with the torch, I couldn't help but think of the countless athletes dedicated to reaching this pinnacle of sport. The athletes' passion, dedication, and perseverance that brought me to the Olympics three times.
Good luck to the Athletes
As we approach the opening of the Paris 2024 Olympics, May all athletes perform at their best, embrace the spirit of fair competition, and create memories that will last a lifetime. To those who are going to watch and participate in the Games in various roles: May everyone come together to celebrate the sporting achievements of the athletes and the unity of nations through sport.
